I had the good fortune to meet Rick during an advent prayer workshop in December of 2021, and we hit it off. We both live in Washington Heights and share the same love for the natural beauty of this northern most tip of Manhattan; the woods that overlook the Hudson River, the Cloister Museum, and the Shrine of Mother Cabrini. If you have never explored this neighborhood before, you owe yourself a visit!

The Visual Commentary on Scripture (VCS) is a freely accessible online publication that provides theological commentary on the Bible in dialogue with works of art. Each exhibition consists of three artworks and associated commentaries grouped around a Bible passage. When you choose an exhibition you get to view three related artworks and Bible passage. Each image is zoomable so you can enjoy it in greater detail. New exhibitions are being added all the time. Eventually the VCS aims to have exhibitions covering the entire Bible.

Commentary on my art work is provided by Jonathan Homrighausen, a doctoral candidate, Duke Divinity School. In Jonathan’s article, my work is flanked by an example of the psalm from the Utrecht Psalter, c. 820 -45 and by Rembrandt’s ‘Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee’ 1633. So I’m in great company.

Once at the web-page, hit the 'next ' arrow to examine each image. if you click on 'Commentary' you can read about the three works and how Jonathan connects them. Clicking on the image itself will allow you to enlarge and examine it in detail.

It's gratifying, and humbling, to be recognized in this way - gratifying to know that someone out there has seen my work, connected with it, and found my interpretation to be visually compelling and sound from a scriptural viewpoint. Humbling - because it means that whatever gift I have been given I have used to touch others and to praise God the Creator's majesty. Psalm 93 was created during my artist in residency at Pendle Hill, in 2017. You can see more of my psalm series by going to my home page and clicking on that tile.

I will give a prepared message to the Morningside Meeting community on my residency at Pendle Hill this summer. The artwork consists of four large meditations on selected Psalms from the Bible. I will have the works available and will speak to the process of creating the works.

Morningside Meeting is a Quarter Meeting for Worship located at Riverside Church (120th street and Riverside Avenue) on the 12th floor. You are welcome to attend the meeting for worship which begins at 11:00am and ends at noon.

Residency at Pendle Hill - Summer 2017

In the summer of 2017 I will taking a two month residency at Pendle Hill, a Quaker retreat center located just west of Philadelphia. I intend to continue working on my Psalm Series that I began in 2013. I will post new work to the website. I am very excited by this opportunity and I thank Pendle Hill for the residency and their support of my art and my process.
